Laparoscopic surgery, also known as keyhole surgery, is an outpatient procedure performed on the pelvis (to check reproductive organs) or abdomen using smaller incisions, allowing you to recover at home and reduce your risk of infection. General surgeon Dr. Jeremy Juern offers this minimally invasive surgical technique at his office in Roseville, California. His practice is physician-referral only, so you need to request one from your doctor. You can contact his office to ask questions or learn more about undergoing laparoscopic surgery.

Laparoscopic Surgery Q&A

What is laparoscopic surgery?

Laparoscopic surgery is a minimally-invasive procedure that can be used to treat several medical conditions. The technique is used not only in the field of gynecology, but in many other types of specialties as well, including gastroenterology and orthopedics.

Dr. Jeremy Juern is a skilled general surgeon who uses instruments designed to work through small incisions, avoiding the need for larger incisions (such as those used in traditional open surgery) so patients enjoy a more comfortable recovery as well as a reduced risk of infection.

The laparoscope is a thin and flexible tube with a small camera device at the end of the instrument. The camera provides clear images that are transmitted to a video screen in the operating room where Dr. Jeremy Juern can see them. Most minimally-invasive surgeries can be performed on an outpatient basis.

What conditions can be treated with laparoscopic surgery?

Laparoscopic surgery can be used to perform procedures like:

  • Hernia repair
  • Colon cancer treatment
  • Gallbladder cancer treatment
  • Irritable bowel disease treatment
  • Cholecystectomy
  • Appendectomy
  • Hysterectomy
  • Oophorectomy
  • Removal of scars or adhesions, cysts, and some other growths
  • Fibroid removal
  • Tubal ligation
  • Treatment of ectopic pregnancy
  • Pelvic inflammatory disease treatment

Laparoscopic procedures are also used to perform biopsies (removing a sample of tissue for lab analysis) to diagnose causes of medical conditions and evaluate symptoms in more detail.

What can I expect with laparoscopic surgery?

Your laparoscopic surgery experience depends on the condition being addressed, but generally speaking, the surgery is performed under sedation and local anesthesia or general anesthesia. Many procedures are performed on an outpatient basis, meaning you can go home the same day to recover comfortably.

Once you've been sedated, Dr. Jeremy Juern makes a small incision to access the surgical site and insert the laparoscope. Gas is pumped into the site to provide him with a better view to see the affected area. He then makes one or two other small incisions to provide access for the special surgical instruments.

If a laparoscopy is being performed solely for diagnosis, Dr. Jeremy Juern may only make one incision. Most laparoscopic procedures take around 90 minutes to perform. After your procedure is complete, you’ll remain in a recovery room for a while for monitoring before being discharged. All minimally invasive surgeries are performed in Dr. Jeremy Juern’s office.
